Frazier is still unsure about Peterson's availability for training camp. Even if he doesn't start camp on the PUP list, we fully expect Peterson to be eased into August practices. Now that the Vikings appear to be on-board with Peterson's Week 1 expectations, it's hard to remain skeptical that he is indeed an athletic marvel. Due to the complexity of the injury, however, a preseason setback certainly can't be ruled out.

Peterson's outlook does look good for Opening Day -- provided no training-camp setbacks -- but the Vikings' top beat writer believes Toby Gerhart is "in line to carry the load out of the gate." It sounds like Peterson's role could grow on a weekly basis if he shows his explosion and cutting ability are all the way back. There's also a chance that Peterson takes a while to rediscover his old burst. We're anxious to see him on the field in preseason games.

He'd be forced to sit out six games if he remained there until the regular season, however. For now, the tea leaves suggest AP will be ready for Week 1.

It means he cannot start the regular season on reserve/PUP. Peterson is already working with the first team at Vikings practice and figures to play in a game at some point this preseason. It's clear that Peterson has not suffered a setback since his ACL surgery in December and, although he could still miss a game or two, he's on track to return in time for Week 1 against Jacksonville.

Frazier stressed the move has nothing to do with Peterson's progress, and is strictly precautionary. It's unideal that Peterson's first live reps since shredding his left knee will come in a regular-season game, but there's been nary a discouraging report on his rehab. AP will be limited for potentially 2-3 games, but could be back to full speed by the season's second month.

Peterson has been practicing without contact for more than a week now. It's a great sign that he was able to take 18 first-team carries on Monday and wake up the next day with no complications in his knee. Players often experience swelling and soreness when they first return to the field following an ACL tear. If he can sustain these good vibes after taking some hits, he'll be on track for an impact in Week 1.

Peterson has been pushing hard to play, but the Vikings are continuing to exercise extreme caution with their $96 million back. AP pushed similarly to avoid the camp/PUP list and to suit up in the preseason, but was vetoed by the coaching staff both times. The tea leaves are beginning to suggest the Vikes will hold AP out for a week, giving Toby Gerhart a heavy load in his absence. "We’ll talk about it as the week goes on and see how he's doing," said Frazier." And if it’s even a viable option to let him play."

ESPN 1500's Tom Pelissero is predicting 5-10 carries for Peterson versus the Jaguars, "unless something goes wrong." Peterson said Thursday that he's been "cutting with all my power, all my force" with no ill effects. Although Peterson has a "gut feeling" that he will play, the Vikings have set a limited number of plays for him. We wouldn't trust Peterson as a flex option this week.

Peterson continues to show superhuman qualities. While Jamaal Charles is feeling soreness in his surgically-repaired knee and Rashard Mendenhall is just getting back in contact drills, Peterson has taken full workloads in back-to-back weeks and emerged stronger. Despite a brutal matchup against the Niners on Sunday, he's an obvious must-start. "We think he's getting to that point where we can think about a few more carries," Frazier said.

Peterson obviously had a 25-carry limit in Week 3, as Toby Gerhart fumbled three times in four carries while attempting to kill the clock. It's good sign that Peterson, still running as violently as any back in the league, feels close to normal.
